LAIKA Signs On to PrismSlicer for Full-Color 3D Printed Faces, and a Resin Version Costs €5.95 a Month

Stop-motion studio LAIKA has signed an agreement to add PrismSlicer, a renderer that previews how a full-color PolyJet print will look before it’s printed, to its artists’ tools. The Prague company behind it, Additive Appearance, also sells a hobby version for resin printers.

LAIKA prints hundreds of thousands of detailed faces for every film, 3D Printing Industry reported on Oct. 21. Its newest feature, Wildwood, opens Oct. 23; the studio says it chose PrismSlicer with future productions in mind.

What PrismSlicer Does for LAIKA’s 3D Printed Faces

Full-color printing has a stubborn gap: what looks right on screen doesn’t always look right in the printed part. Each mismatch at LAIKA can mean another print. PrismSlicer previews a model’s color, translucency and surface finish first, including under LAIKA’s custom studio lighting.

“Having reliable, fast renders has the potential to reduce development time significantly,” said Robert Ducey, a technical supervisor at LAIKA. Note the hedge. So far the only figures are initial projections that the previews could cut print iterations and speed up artist feedback, with no measured results published.

The deal followed a trial period. During it, PrismSlicer gained a command-line interface for automation, plus new simulation features meant to make renders more realistic.

LAIKA has chased this problem before. For Missing Link, it paired Stratasys J750 printers with Fraunhofer’s Cuttlefish driver to print more than 106,000 facial expressions.

PrismSlicer Price: €5.95 a Month for Resin, €313.95 a Month for Full-Color

Most makers won’t need the full-color tier. The PrismSlicer pricing page lists three paid tiers, in euros only:

The full-color version is “engineered specifically for the PolyJet (Material-Jetting or UV Inkjet)” process and works with multiple manufacturers, the company says. It doesn’t publish a list of supported printers.

What PrismSlicer Means for Resin and Full-Color Printer Owners

If you mix your own resin colors: this is the tool aimed at you. With a CMYKW kit (cyan, magenta, yellow, black and white base resins), the free Color Picker gives mixing ratios for a target shade. PrismSlicer SLA previews that mix on your actual model, including how light shines through thin parts. The free demo includes the virtual mixing and photorealistic preview, but it watermarks the preview images and locks some other features. The software is pitched as working with any resin printer and kit, but it exports slices directly only for Prusa SL1 and SL1S printers (others need conversion through UVTools) and can’t generate supports. In practice, you may preview in PrismSlicer and slice for your printer elsewhere.

My read on the cost: the company’s own estimates put one physical test round at measuring (15 minutes), stirring (5), a test print (10 or more) and cleanup (15 to 30). That’s at least 45 minutes per round, by my math. If you mix colors a few times a year, start with the free Color Picker and the watermarked demo, and pay for the monthly plan only in months you need clean previews. The yearly plan beats paying monthly only if you’d keep it nine months or more.

The catch is calibration. The company says it has lab-measured the resin kits its Color Picker supports. For other resins you can run a one-time, three-step calibration yourself, borrow one from a community database, or pay for measurements in the company’s optical lab. We found no independent accuracy tests on hobby resins.

If you buy pre-colored resin: there’s little here for you. Your bigger choices are in our ABS-like vs standard resin test.

If you’re eyeing the Flashforge CJ270: it sprays UV-cured resin like LAIKA’s PolyJet machines, which puts it in the material-jetting category PrismSlicer targets. But PrismSlicer publishes no printer list at all, the CJ270 ships with Flashforge’s own ColorPrint slicer, and our Flashforge CJ270 breakdown notes that only Flashforge resin works in it. Don’t assume compatibility.

If you print with filament: nothing in the PrismSlicer lineup covers filament printers. If a first resin printer is on your list this season, our Black Friday 3D printer deals guide covers which machines are worth considering.

PrismSlicer FAQ

What is PrismSlicer for full-color 3D printing?

PrismSlicer is slicer and preview software from Additive Appearance, a Charles University spin-off in Prague. It simulates how color and translucency will look in a full-color or resin 3D print before you print it.

How much does PrismSlicer cost?

Paid plans start at €5.95 a month (or €52.95 a year) for the resin version. The full-color PolyJet version runs €313.95 monthly (€3,134.95 yearly), and the Color Picker and watermarked SLA demo are free.

Which 3D printers does PrismSlicer work with?

Additive Appearance says the full-color version is built for PolyJet-style inkjet printers from several brands, though it publishes no printer list. PrismSlicer SLA previews resin mixes for SLA and DLP printers, and exports slices directly for Prusa SL1 and SL1S models. The lineup has no version for filament (FDM) printers.

What We Still Don’t Know About LAIKA’s PrismSlicer Rollout

  • Which film comes first: LAIKA hasn’t said which future production will use it.
  • Real savings: fewer print iterations is a projection, with no published numbers.
  • Printer support: there’s no named list for the full-color version, so CJ270 owners can’t check.
  • US pricing: all prices are in euros, and the pricing page doesn’t say whether tax is included.

Wildwood opens Oct. 23. The real test comes when LAIKA says how many face prints PrismSlicer saved on a future film.
