The countdown on the SparkX i8 campaign is doing its job. You’ve seen the Early Bird price, the four-color toolhead, and a Reddit thread where half the commenters are ready to pledge and the other half ask why a listed company needs crowdfunding at all.
A pledge works differently from a store order. Your pledge reserves a spot in a production run that hasn’t shipped, from a company whose last Indiegogo product still hasn’t confirmed shipments, a quarter past its original window. The campaign’s first day also came with a payment glitch.

Creality also promised the first 1,000 orders placed in the first 24 hours a refund of shipping and taxes, capped at $50 and paid after the campaign ends. That window has closed. Pledge prices are listed before tax. CFS Lite is also sold as a $119 add-on, which is how the Early Bird printer plus the feeder adds up to the $428 Color Combo.
Creality says the campaign passed $1 million in 40 minutes and reached $1.9 million from 5,000+ backers by the end of day one. On Sept 24 the page showed $2,205,940 from 5,705 backers, with 37 days left. The Super Early Bird tier stopped at 4,000 pledges, and the Early Bird tier had 1,260.
What Went Wrong With SparkX i8 Indiegogo Payments on Launch Day
On launch day, some backers saw their bank charge go through while Indiegogo showed no pledge, and a few were charged more than once. Creality acknowledged the problem on Reddit on Sept 22 and set up a ticket form for affected backers.
The reports came fast in the r/Creality launch thread on Sept 21. One backer wrote that Indiegogo “took my money but claimed the payment didn’t go through.” Another was charged twice with an empty Payments tab. A third reported five charges while holding backer #996, inside the $50 refund window.
Creality’s official account replied the next day that it was “in communication with the Indiegogo team” and asked affected backers to submit a Payment Issue Ticket. At least one backer then heard back from Indiegogo about a refund, with a catch: “no path to get the super early bird pledge.”
What to Do If Indiegogo Charged You Twice for the SparkX i8
- Open the Payments tab in your Indiegogo account and click the faint “Recent” link. By default the tab shows upcoming payments, which is why one r/Creality backer’s tab looked empty at first. Match every line against your card statement and screenshot both.
- File Creality’s Payment Issue Ticket (linked in Creality’s Sept 22 Reddit reply) with your order ID, the amounts, and the screenshots.
- Contact Indiegogo support too. Indiegogo says you’ll get a refund confirmation email, and the money can take up to 5 business days to arrive after that.
- Wait for both answers before you file a card chargeback. A chargeback opens a separate dispute and can tangle up the one pledge you actually want to keep.
Creality’s Indiegogo Track Record Before the SparkX i8: What the M1 and R1 Delay Shows
Creality’s previous Indiegogo hardware, the Filament Maker M1 and Shredder R1, raised $6.8 million and then missed its original Q2 2026 shipping window. As of Sept 24, Creality hadn’t confirmed that any units have shipped. A big company doesn’t guarantee an on-time crowdfunding delivery.
The top-voted comment in the launch thread asked the obvious question: “Why does a billion dollar company need crowdfunding?” Creality hasn’t answered it. What’s on record: Creality’s Hong Kong IPO put it on the exchange on May 29 (03388.HK), it says it has sold more than 6 million units, and it launched the SparkX i7 on the same early-bird-then-retail path. Our read: for Creality, Indiegogo is a pre-sale and marketing channel, and the cash is secondary.
Reservations opened in February with a Q2 shipping promise, and the Indiegogo campaign closed at $6,816,733 from 5,320 backers. April to June passed with no units shipped. In July, Creality postponed fulfillment after factory runs showed filament diameter drifting out of spec, worst on high-temperature materials. Backers got a coupon for official pellets and a promise of updates about every two weeks. The coupon doesn’t return any money.
In early September, Creality asked backers to confirm their shipping addresses by September 20, and a comment on the M1 campaign page now points to shipping starting around September 30, citing the backer Facebook group. Creality’s own blog still lists the M1 and R1 as not yet confirmed as shipping. One M1 backer summed up the mood in the i8 countdown thread on Sept 20: they paid “in March,” were told July, and the machines still weren’t “ready to manufacture.”
There’s a fair reading, too. Creality held the shipment instead of sending a machine it knew was out of spec. That’s the behavior you want from a campaign you’ve backed.
The i8 also carries a different kind of risk. It shares the i7’s 260 × 260 × 255 mm build volume and 500 mm/s motion system, and Creality’s Indiegogo page says it’s “built on the i7’s proven reliability and user feedback.” The new part is the four-channel toolhead.
The M1 was a brand-new product category. A delay on the M1’s scale looks less likely here, but first-batch toolhead yield is something nobody outside Creality can check.
The i7 gives you a price precedent as well. Its early backers paid $339 for the Combo with CFS Lite, plus a year of Creality Cloud membership and an extended warranty. Today the same Combo sells for $359 on Amazon, so backing early beat today’s street price by about 6%.
What Indiegogo Protects, and How to Cancel a SparkX i8 Pledge
The SparkX i8 campaign runs as Indiegogo Express Crowdfunding and doesn’t show Indiegogo’s Shipping Guarantee badge, so your protection is Creality’s own refund policy. You can cancel for a refund through Creality support until your printer ships, and not after.
Indiegogo launched the Shipping Guarantee in August 2024. To qualify, a campaign needs a product in its final manufacturing stages and a proven crowdfunding record on the site. For covered campaigns, Indiegogo holds backer money until the product ships and refunds backers itself if it doesn’t ship as promised.
Covered campaigns show a Shipping Guarantee badge above the “Pick Your Perk” button. The SparkX i8 page showed no such badge on Sept 24. It carries an “Express Crowdfunding Risks” notice instead, and Creality’s own risk section lists possible delays in development, manufacturing, quality control, certification, and shipping.
Any crowdfunded printer carries three risks: you’re reserving a machine that doesn’t exist at retail yet, independent tests on production hardware don’t exist either, and delivery isn’t guaranteed. The SparkX i8 partly answers the second point with early reviews. The first and third still apply.
How to Cancel or Get a Refund on a SparkX i8 Indiegogo Pledge
- Contact Creality support. Creality’s campaign page says cancellation and refund requests go to its customer support team and “cannot be submitted or processed automatically through the Indiegogo platform.”
- Expect a possible fee deduction. Indiegogo’s help center says a refund can be reduced by the platform’s transaction fee, so you may not get every dollar back.
- Decide before it ships. In Creality’s words: “Once your order has been shipped and a tracking number has been provided, the order will no longer be eligible for a refund.”
What the SparkX i8 Reviews Can’t Tell You About the Unit You’ll Receive
The two in-depth SparkX i8 reviews we’ve found, from TheLayeredWorkshop and JJ Shankles, used pre-production machines on beta software. You’ll get a production unit, and nobody outside Creality has tested one yet.
TheLayeredWorkshop said it plainly on camera: “this is a pre-production machine. The packaging, instructions, and even some of the accessories could change before the production units actually ship.” Their test slicer was also locked to 0.20 mm layers, so fine-detail printing went untested.
JJ Shankles couldn’t test the CFS Lite connection because the review unit ran beta firmware. Creality says the i8 will support CFS Lite with its launch firmware, with October as the target. Four channels stay four channels, though. CFS Lite adds spool management and won’t turn the i8 into a 16-color machine.
Both reviewers disclosed their ties. TheLayeredWorkshop says Creality sent the machine and asked for feedback, adding: “They didn’t ask me to give a sales pitch.” JJ Shankles’ video description carries affiliate links and coupon codes.
On reliability, TheLayeredWorkshop ran the i8 for weeks without heat creep or a single clog, and then added the honest caveat: “does that mean nobody is ever going to experience a clog or a failprint? Of course not.”
Some limits won’t change with firmware:
- Materials: PLA and PETG only. TPU isn’t supported.
- One hotend: you can’t mix materials that need different temperatures in the same print, and the nozzle heats up slowly, according to JJ Shankles.
- Nozzles: 0.4 mm ships with the printer. Creality says 0.2, 0.6, and 0.8 mm options are planned, with details “announced later.”
- Spare parts: Creality hasn’t published a replacement nozzle price. It was the top question (10 upvotes) under its own hotend-swap video on r/Creality.
The first backer units should land in November. A few weeks of owner reports would answer most of these questions, but waiting past Oct 31 costs you the Early Bird discount.
Check the SparkX i8 Marketing Numbers Before You Pledge
Creality’s headline savings claim has changed once and still doesn’t add up, and its own print-time figures keep moving. Treat every figure on the campaign page as a best case, then rerun it with your own numbers.
The version of the page live through early September claimed 438 kg of filament saved per year, worth about $1,500. r/3Dprinting did the division: in a Sept 9 thread with 86 upvotes, one commenter worked out that $1,500 across 400+ spools means each spool costs around $3.
By Sept 24, Creality’s i8 landing page (separate from the Indiegogo page) had a new test model (a four-color pillar) and a new footnote: 707 g per print on the i8 against 1,776 g on a “traditional bedslinger,” one print every 20 hours, all year, at $30 per kg. The page now labels that “$15,000.” Run the check yourself:

The chart next to that footnote lists 1,773 g for the other printer, 3 g off Creality’s own footnote.
The bigger problem is the premise. The math assumes you print the same four-color model around the clock for a year. You won’t. Plug your real hours into a 3D print cost calculator instead.
Print times have moved between page versions too. In August, Creality’s campaign page gave the i8 14 h 41 min for its Crystal Dragon comparison. On Sept 24 the same card reads 10 h 9 min, while the page’s separate print-time chart shows 18 h 10 min against 18 h 24 min for an independent four-toolhead printer. Neither version names the “Others” it compares against.
The zero-waste claim has fine print as well. The Indiegogo page says there’s no purging during printing and “only a small amount of filament is flushed at the start,” and its no-prime-tower mode is “not applicable to all 3D models.”
The independent numbers are more useful. TheLayeredWorkshop printed a Spider-Man bust at Creality’s default flush multiplier: 9 h 44 min and 245.59 g. At the 0.15 multiplier Creality recommended, the same print took 5 h 10 min and 83.26 g, with no visible quality loss. For comparison, the reviewer listed 6 h 21 min and 108.96 g for a Flashforge Creator 5 toolchanger.
JJ Shankles’ Mini Cooper made 273 color changes and left a 16.46 g prime tower next to a 63.66 g model. The slicer estimated 3 h 01 min, and the real print took 3 h 16 min. The i8 does waste less, and your slicer settings decide how much less.

The Early Bird tier saves you $90 off the MSRP. You pay for that with about two months of waiting and first-batch risk. If you mostly print in one color, neither SparkX i8 price makes sense.

Before launch, JJ Shankles guessed the i8 would land “between the i7 and the K series of printers.” At its crowdfunding and retail prices it sits right around the i7 Combo, so the choice comes down to where the four colors live: inside the toolhead on the i8, or in an external feeder on the i7. My Take: Who Should Back the SparkX i8 on Indiegogo and Who Should Wait
Back the SparkX i8 at its Early Bird price only if a four-color bedslinger is what you’re after and a delivery that slips into December wouldn’t bother you. Everyone else should wait for owner reports or buy an i7 that ships now.
Back it if:
- You want four-color prints on a bedslinger and don’t need TPU or mixed materials.
- The Early Bird price fits your budget and you won’t need the printer before December.
- Your Indiegogo payment went through cleanly and your payment record matches your bank.
- You’re comfortable updating firmware on a first-batch machine.
Wait if:
- A gift or a job depends on the printer arriving by a set date.
- Most of your prints are single-color. The i7 ships today at $229 bare or $359 as a Combo.
- You need TPU, 0.2 mm detail, or two materials in one print.
- Your launch-day payment still isn’t sorted out.

TheLayeredWorkshop would buy one: “So, would I buy one? Absolutely.” One r/Creality commenter made the case for patience just as well: “probably smart to give it a month or so, to make sure that there’s no teething issues in the first couple batches.”
If I were deciding today, I’d only take the Early Bird tier if my payment had cleared cleanly and I had no deadline for the printer. The $90 discount is real. Two months of waiting on brand-new toolhead hardware is the price of it.
If you do back it, the i8 prints PLA and PETG only. A four-color PLA set covers your first multicolor prints while you wait for the unit to ship.
